Time Out New York - Cabaret

by H. Scott Jolley

My apologies to all those struggling cabaret singers out there, but there's nothing like watching a real pro work. Judy Kaye, who's wowed Broadway with supporting roles in Phantom and Ragtime, has the spotlight all to herself with Solo, her new show at Arci's Place. There isn't much patter between numbers, but who needs explanations when you've got Kaye's fantastic voice? Best of all, Kaye doesn't just sing, she really inhabits each song as only a true actress can: She channels Fanny Brice for a hilarious "Sheik of Avenue B," while the Sondheim weepie "Losing My Mind" becomes a white-hot blast of fury from an obsessive lover.
